## What is shadow protection?
Shadow protection (currently in limited private preview) extends behavioral-based blocking and containment capabilities by blocking malicious artifacts or behaviors even if [Windows Defender Antivirus](https://docs.microsoft.com/windows/security/threat-protection/windows-defender-antivirus/windows-defender-antivirus-in-windows-10) is not your active antivirus protection. If your organization has decided to use an antivirus solution other than Windows Defender Antivirus, you are still protected through shadow protection.
